Trip To Beatty / Goldfield - 4/2008

Beatty is a town located on the Amargosa River in Nye County, Nevada. The population was 1,154 at the 2000 census.  The town was named after Montillus, Murray "Old Man" Beatty who settled on a ranch in the area at the end of the 19th century. He was Beatty's first postmaster when it opened on January 19, 1905. He died in December 1908. In 1905, Beatty became a railway center for the Bullfrog Mining District which included mining towns such as nearby Rhyolite, Nevada.

The Death Valley Nut and Candy Company located on the north end of town bills itself as the World's Most Beautiful gas station. It is located between the Motel 6 and the Stagecoach motel/casino.

Goldfield is an unincorporated community in Esmeralda County, Nevada. It is about 170 miles southeast of Carson City, along U.S. Route 95. The population was 440 at the 2000 census, almost half of the county's population, though for several years in the early 20th century Goldfield was the largest town in Nevada.

Goldfield was a boomtown in the first decade of the 20th century due to the discovery of gold — between 1903 and 1940, Goldfield's mines produced more than $86 million. While a small permanent population remains in Goldfield, it is largely a ghost town. Gold exploration still continues in and around the town today.
